Michigan Pro-Sportsman Bill Receives Strong
Support in House Committee
A Michigan bill would enable state wildlife professionals to make
decisions about what species may be hunted.
The bill, HB 5478, passed the House Committee on Conservation and Outdoor
Recreation by a vote of eight to one and has been referred to the House
floor with a recommendation to pass. It specifies that the Michigan
Natural Resources Commission must hold two public hearings before adding
or
deleting a species from the list of game animals and that the legislature
retains the authority to amend any such act by statute. Currently, only
the legislature may designate a species as game and is only required to
hold one public hearing when amending the list.
The WLFA supports the management of wildlife by professional managers and
this includes the designation of game. House Bill 5478 will give the
Natural Resources Commission the exclusive authority to regulate the
taking of game in Michigan using principles of scientific management.
Take Action! Michigan sportsmen are urged to contact their state
representatives to show them that you overwhelmingly support HB
5478. Explain that designating game is a pivotal part of the process
of scientific game management and it should be the responsibility of
professional
wildlife managers. To find your representatives, call (517) 373-0135 or
