Scholastic Clay Target Program
The Scholastic Clay Target Program ("SCTP") is a program of the National
Shooting Sports Foundation ("NSSF") through which gun clubs, shooting facilities
and other organizations committed to the development of young adults can provide
these individuals with opportunities to participate in organized, adult
supervised trap, skeet and sporting clay activities including the Olympic styles
of Bunker Trap and International Skeet. Through the SCTP, the NSSF, in
cooperation with the Amateur Trapshooting Association ("ATA"), the National
Skeet Shooting Association ("NSSA"), the National Sporting Clays
Association ("NSCA") and USA Shooting (USAS), has exposed thousands of
individuals in grades 12 and under to the positive experience of the shooting
sports.
The SCTP is more than just another shooting program. The SCTP is
designed to instill in young people a set of personal values and character
traits that teaches fair play, compassionate understanding, individual
responsibility, sportsmanship, self-discipline, and personal commitment -
qualities necessary to become successful and contributing members of society.
Competition is a part of the SCTP, but it is not the program's underlying
principle. The "win-at-all-costs" philosophy has no place in the SCTP.
Striving to win while playing by the rules does. It is the DUTY of
everyone involved in the SCTP - coaches, parents and participants - to be role
models for SCTP team members to emulate by upholding high moral and ethical
standards of personal conduct.
SCTP activities are designed to incorporate two indispensable elements -
SAFETY AND FUN. SAFETY is incorporated into ALL facets of SCTP activities.
Team practices and competitive shoots include the element of FUN for all
participants. SCTP participants learn the safe and responsible handling
and use of firearms. They discover the joy of contributing to a shared
team goal and the commitment that goes along with it. During this
self-discovery process team members develop proficiency in a sport that can be
shared and enjoyed with family and friends for a lifetime.

Trapshooters place second at state event
July 3, 2008
Three Blue Water Area trap
shooters medaled Saturday at the Scholastic Clay
Target Program Michigan Trap State Championship.
Representing Huron Pointe
Sportsman's Association were Clarence Van Camp
of Marysville, Geno Salvatore of Casco Township
and Michael Sintebin of New Baltimore.

The rest of the squad
consisted of Ben Wallace of St. Clair Shores and
Matthew Hines of Chesterfield.
The squad took second place
in the Varsity Division (grades 9-12) of the
Michigan Trapshooting Association in Mason.
Winning the division with 929
out of 1,000 targets was the Munith Rod & Gun
team. Huron Pointe hit 910 targets.
The SCTP, which has shooters
in grades 12 and under, is a program of the
National Shooting Sports Foundation managed in
partnership with the national governing bodies
for shooting sports: USA Shooting, Amateur
Trapshooting Association, National Skeet
Shooting Association and National Sporting Clays
Association.
In eight years, the program,
which is considered "the
Little League of shooting sports," has grown
to more than 8,000 students. More than 45 states
are expected to compete this year.
Michigan teams participating
in the state-title shoot qualified for the SCTP
national championships, set for July 31 to Aug.
5 at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex
in Sparta, Ill.
The top young shooters could
be selected to attend an Olympic development
camp in Colorado Springs, and some will go on to
compete at the collegiate level.
Van Camp, a recent Marysville
graduate, competed in the Junior Olympic
Shooting competition in September at the Olympic
Training Center.
